SACRAMENTO FASHION WEEK - FEBRUARY 2014, SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA

Dear followers,

how are you? How was the first week of the new year?

As I have anticipated in my last post, here I am, celebrating the beginning of 2014 sharing with you this amazing interview I had the pleasure to have with Duane Ram, the Producer and the Executive Director of Sacramento Fashion Week.
I had the great honor to meet Duane in person last November in Sacramento, California, during one of Sacramento Fashion Affair events. It was held in Trumpette Inc building.

Here you can see a couple of pictures of me (blonde one with Wonder Anatomie bone jacket) and Duane and some fashion designers at the event, taken by the official photographer of the event, Igor Kondrya.

And here is my interview with Duane! have fun!

TFL: Do you remember your first Sac Fashion Week?
D: Sac Fashion Week started from a Mixer in 2004.  I had just moved out to Sacramento from the San Francisco Bay Area and was attending a model casting.  There I met a small group of individuals that included photographers and designers who were trying to organize an event to connect the local fashion community.  The event turned out great and we were all amazed at how many people attended.

TFL: Do you remember how you got started with it?
D: I started with the production as a model.  At the time I had already been working in the industry for a few years. It also helped that I had done a number of fashion shows through out California, including LA Fashion Week and San Francisco Fashion Week.  So the production relied on my experience to cast and train the models.  As the years went by, I kept getting more and more involved with the behind the scenes, and eventually taking on the role of Executive Director and Producer in 2010.

TFL: Duane, you are an American actor and model, why did you want to start this amazing adventure of Sacramento Fashion Week? Could you tell me about your passion for fashion?
D: When I moved out to Sacramento, I was a little disappointed that there wasn't much happening in terms of the fashion scene.  There were shows happening but they were mostly in clubs and bars.  I knew that because I participated as a model in them, and they weren't doing the designers justice.  They were entertaining but that's all they were doing.  As a model, I couldn't really use the pictures from these shows, and it was also difficult to even get a copy of them.  No one was really working together. I was still very active as an actor and model in San Francisco, and I was involved in fashion shows in San Francisco.  I saw first hand how they put them together.  They had them in ballrooms and huge venues that were presented and light up well.  They had better pictures but it was still a difficult task to get them as a model.  So what I did was take my experience from different shows and incorporate what I believed worked into our production.

TFL: Next February 2014 Sac Fashion Week will celebrate its 8th birthday, isn’t it? How will you celebrate? Where will it be held? And when?
D: Every Fashion Week is actually a birthday party if you think about it.  We will start off with a Launch Party on Sunday, February 16th and the week will run through Saturday, February 22nd.  Things are always changing but you can be sure we will have 3 days of fashion showcases.  When we started, we only had one showcase and a launch party.  Not every city has a full week but we have managed to do so.

TFL: I know the main theme of Sac Fashion Week 2014 will be fashion and technology. Can you explain this concept to me?
D: This year we are trying to show how fashion has grown and that technology has a big part in that.  Earlier this year, Lady Gaga presented the first ever flying dress at the launch of her new album.  We don't quite have flying dresses taking off the runway but it just goes to show the industry is evolving.  There is a company out of San Francisco called Future tech wear.  They are working on a line of electronic clothing and has started a kickstarter account introducing Zackees Turn Signal Gloves.  Clothing made for cyclic that signals when the rider is turning.

TFL: Could you tell us how many fashion shows will there be next February?
D: We have 3 fashion showcases happening in February.  The designer showcases happens on Friday, February 21st and Saturday, February 22nd.  On Friday we have 8 designers showcasing Spring/Summer Collections and then on Saturday another 8 designers will be showcasing Winter/Fall Collections.  On Thursday, February 20th there is the boutique showcase where we bring in 6 boutiques  from in and around Sacramento to set up a pop up boutique in the venue.  This will give all the attendees an opportunity to shop and check out a store they may not have known about. In addition to these featured boutiques, we will also have food, wine and jewelry vendors creating a unique shop and dine experience.  The event climax will be when the 6 boutiques all take to the runway one after the other presenting the newest looks for the season, which will all be available for purchase right after the show.

TFL:  I know you have a great goal for your Sac Fashion Week: to let it be bigger and bigger as the years go on. Do you think it can be a new NYFW?
D: We can certainly try and we do aim to be like NYFW, but we can't do what New York does.  Every city is different, and we have to cater it to our surroundings to make it work.

TFL: Tell us how is a typical SAC Fashion Week day.
D: Well one of the hardest days is Friday.  Main reason is because we just do the boutique showcase and we have to totally change the whole staging set up for the designer showcase.
Starting from 7:00 a.m. the staging crew and all the staff starts transforming the previous nights set up into a totally different look and things unfold as the day goes on: from the cleaning operations to the meetings over the process of the day, the hair and make up stylists get ready to set up of the backstage, the models arrive and get prepared. The runway seating is prepared and we meet often to check that everything is ok. In the afternoon the media and the VIPs arrive and at 7:00 p.m. the general admission starts. The show ends at around 10:00 p.m. and we make an appearance at the after party. The night ends at 1:00 a.m.
That's a full day, isn't it?

TFL: Do you want to share a couple of names of designers with whom you’re working for the next SAC Fashion Week?
D: I always like to invite back a couple of past designers that presented well. It helps to give the show some continuity.  It also shows that designers like doing our showcase and want to return.  Last year designer Michael Kouri  owed the audience with his dramatic designs so we are looking forward to his Fall/Winter 2014 Collection.  Also returning are local favorites designes Janelle Cardenas,  Yennie Zhou and Maisha Bahati   We also have a special returning guest designer Vasily Vein, whose collections always bring out the wow factor.

TFL: Could you tell me where my readers can follow SAC Fashion Week news and updates?
D: Our facebook account is always active with local and national updates in the fashion industry.  As we get closer to our events you can find up to date posts on model castings and the behind the scenes prep for the week.  We also have a youtube account where you can view our mini documentaries and behind the scenes look at previous years.  There are other social media accounts like twitter and instergram that are all linked to our website.  All of which have some updates unique to them.

TFL: Thank you, Duane, for the time you dedicated to me and The Fashionable Lounge, my readers from all over the world and I really appreciate it.

Guys, did you find this interview interesting? Let me know your thoughts and if you happen to be in Sacramento next Februrary, from the 16th to the 22nd you could be part of one of the most waited Fashion Affairs in the area!!!!

Carissimi lettori,

come state?

TFL: E ti ricordi come hai iniziato?
D: Ho iniziato come modello.

Nessuno lavorava in team.

Come festeggerete?

Poi tutti all'after party.

Fatemelo sapere. Controllate i dettagli su www.sacfashionweek.com!!!
